The Licensed Surveyor Journey

A licensed surveyor is a highly qualified professional who is the only legal authority to define land boundaries, prepare subdivision plans, and provide essential legal documentation for surveys. Their expertise extends across various aspects of land management, including planning, titles, and local land laws. In the context of construction, renovation, or land development, licensed surveyors ensure that projects comply with regulations, identify legal boundaries, assist in obtaining approvals, and advise on the feasibility of legally developing or altering land. Their services are critical in ensuring that development projects progress smoothly and within the confines of the law.

To become a licensed surveyor in Western Australia, you must follow these steps:

  1. Obtain a Bachelor of Surveying Degree:

    • A 4-year Bachelor of Surveying Degree from a recognized university such as Curtin University, or an equivalent institution.

  2. Complete a Professional Training Agreement:

    • After completing your degree, you must engage in a two-year Professional Training Agreement with a licensed surveyor. This provides hands-on, practical experience under the mentorship of an experienced professional.

  3. Complete Practical Projects and Assessments:

    • During your training, you need to complete five surveying projects. These projects are accompanied by practical and written assessments to showcase your proficiency in surveying practices.

After fulfilling these requirements, you may apply to become a licensed surveyor in Western Australia.

Seamus McGovern was officially welcomed into this prestigious group last night at the award ceremony held by the Land Surveyors Licensing Board of Western Australia, presented to him by the Surveyor general of Western Australia, Dione Bilick.

Seamus primarily obtained his Bachelor of Science in Geomatics specializing in Surveying from the University of Cape Town in 2013. He has worked in a vast array of surveying areas and gained valuable experience with surveying companies throughout his career and after immigrating to Australia he joined CK Maloney Surveying in 2021.

Under the mentorship of Craig Maloney, Seamus has completed his Professional Training Agreement requirements, and is now recognized as a Practicing Licensed Surveyor of Western Australia. His work during his training agreement has seen him develop in many areas including his management skills, his field work and many aspects of administration.

Along with his cadastral work Seamus now leads a Geo-spatial team at CK Maloney Surveying and is a valuable mentor to students and other surveyors in his team. We congratulate Seamus on all his hard work and commitment, and look forward to his continuing contribution to the surveying industry.

Licensed surveyors are regarded as pre-eminent experts in land-related matters, holding a unique and essential role in the legalities of land ownership. Their expertise is divided into three primary functions:

  1. Define:

    • Surveyors provide an in-depth understanding of land, water, and airspace, defining the exact boundaries and spatial relationships of properties while considering physical and environmental factors.

  2. Manage:

    • They interpret and navigate the legal complexities of land ownership, including property titles, zoning regulations, and planning requirements, ensuring that developments align with legal frameworks. Surveyors help property owners understand their rights and obligations.

  3. Protect:

    • Surveyors defend projects and developments from potential legal or environmental challenges. By identifying and addressing obstacles early, they prevent disputes or delays, ensuring projects progress lawfully and efficiently.

Licensed surveyors play a critical role in the lawful use and development of land, contributing to the efficiency and success of construction and development projects. Their expertise ensures that developments are legally sound, protecting the interests of landowners, developers, and other stakeholders.

We once again congratulate Seamus on his achievements and new title!
